Khaplu is a small city located in the northernmost part of Pakistan, in the Gilgit-Baltistan region. It is the capital of the Ghangche District and was once the capital of the old principality of Khaplu. The city is situated at an elevation of 2,438 meters (7,999 ft) and lies 106 km (66 mi) east of the district capital Gilgit. Khaplu is surrounded by mountains and is situated on the bank of the Shyok River. The region around Khaplu is known for its scenic beauty and is a popular tourist destination. The city is home to the Khaplu Fort, which was built in the 18th century, and the Chaqchan Mosque, which is one of the oldest mosques in the region.
