The region has a long history dating back to ancient times. It is believed to have been settled by the Indus Valley Civilization as early as 4000 BCE. In the medieval period, the region was ruled by various local dynasties, including the Abbasid Caliphate, the Ghaznavids, and the Delhi Sultanate.
During the colonial period, the region came under the control of the British East India Company, and the state of Bahawalpur was established as a princely state under the British Raj.
